Studio visit with Vancouver Abstract Painter Lisa Ochowycz

This January 2011 I had the absolute pleasure in spending the morning with Vancouver abstract painter Lisa Ochowycz. We had such a great conversation the time flew by and later, Lisa took the time to answer some of the questions we talked about together so I could share them here with you! (Lisa's studio portrait is taken by photographer Rachel Boekel.)

Lisa thank you so much it's so cool meeting you and thank you for sharing yourself, your studio and your work to inspire myself and others!

Deb: What's your favorite art piece of yours?

Lisa: I am very excited about my Crosstown Series. There is just one piece so far,
but it hints at the relationship between painting and sculpture.

Deb: your favorite painting of another artist?

Lisa: I am absolutely in love with the work of Jean-Francios Provost and
plenitude-du-vide-44 is one of my favorite pieces.

Deb: What 3 pieces of advice would you give to other artists?

Lisa:
1) Remember that an artist career is three dimensional. It contains a
multitude of levels and activities.

2) Build "just for fun" time into your daily routine. Whether that’s
experimenting with a new type of medium, taking your self to an exhibition,
or running around the sea wall. It took me years to figure this one out.

3) Bring a sense of gratitude to your practice.

Deb: What do you do to nourish your soul?

Lisa: Yoga, meditation, good food, and listen to music.

Deb: How would you define success and what has been a key factor in achieving
your success?

Lisa:

Definition of success, could also be know as a "recipe for success"

Simplify - thoughts in your mind, colours in your tool boxes, purpose
Understanding - relationship between objects and oneself
Curiosity - for your environment, for your peers, for learning
Courage - to step beyond something that is working but not fulfilling
Excitement - and enthusiasm for experimentation
Sharing - ones knowledge, passion, and gratitude
Shaking it up - turn your music up and dance!

Key factor in achieving success.

Three things come to mind:

Generosity (finically and emotionally) from others, the desire to constantly
challenge my understanding and my skill level, and a constant desire to
paint.

Deb: What recent or upcoming shows/and or gallery representation/events can
readers look out for to go and see of your work?

Lisa:

I have a joint show with Mary Anne Tateishi at Britannia Community Centre in
July.

A solo show at the Barristers Lounge from May 22-June 25th.

I am also really excited about my "klein" initiative. This is a series of
small and delightful work that I donate 20% of the sales to youth arts
organizations across Canada. Check it out here: http://store.lisaochowycz.ca

Deb: What the best thing about being an artist?

Sharing my paintings with others, that and waking up excited everyday to
head into the studio to paint.

Deb: What's the most challenging thing about being an artist?

Lisa: The pressure to constantly be working usually brought on by financial stress.

Deb: What do you do when your stuck or blocked?

Lisa: I write. I have a special book, pen, and then I just sit down and let it
flow. No sentence structure, no grammar, just writing.

Deb: me too! :)

Lisa 's studio is in the Mergatroid building part of the East Vancouver Culture Crawl and right down the street on Vernon Drive from the Old Foundry building Studios. As close as it's been all year, I a little embarassed to say this was my first time in this super cool buidling. Which by the way also houses Vancouver made Krhoma paints (link) which are made here too. who knew!

The sun came out just around noon and we had a view of the studio roof top building - all the light was fantastic - what a great studio space!

Lisa uses those metal things you put up to hang shelves ( what are they called again?) and covered them with foam and plastic to separate paintings. What a great idea!

Thank you Lisa!

Featured Artist of the Month for Artist in Our Midsts

Artists in Our Midsts Featured Artist of the Month – Deb Chaney, Contemporary Abstract Artist

Here is the unedited interview with Artist in Our Midsts, Vancouver. I am grateful for this opportunity to be featured on the group website. Thank you!

Which artistic media do you prefer to work in and why?

I work in mixed media which for me is a base in acrylics and then on top of that nearly anything goes - from thick polymer mediums such as moulding paste and pouring medium to create depth, to collage including tissue papers and corrugated cardboard for texture, so earth materials such as sand for colour and texture, and finally to artist quality pens and pencils such as Lyza pencil crayons and PITT india ink pens for detail and fun.

With which past or contemporary artists or artworks do you, as an artist, feel a connection? What is it that draws you to them?
Mark Rothko - big bold paintings, his application of colour....
Helen Frakenthauler - staining techniques, her tenacity and art making spanning decades
Michelle Y Williams - my favourite modern artist, I own one of her original p ieces and would give my right arm to study with her!
Michel Keck - her business acumen and her ability to really succeed as a contemporary abstract artist in the marketplace. I admire this tremendously.
Eve Leader - the quality beauty and mystery of her work is amazing.
Sabrina Ward Harrison - her freedom, rawness, venerability in her journalling and art making capture me and I appreciate her risking it all to share her thoughts and words with the world.

What process or technique in art-making interests you?

What intrigues me is creating thick paintings that have thick multi layered encaustic wax-like effect, yet no wax has been used, instead the layer are accumulations of acrylics and mediums.. The process of applying and layering acrylics and mediums, scraping away paint, and doing so without leaving brush marks intrigues me.

What technical challenges do you face in the process of making art?

Trying to re-create Serenity! I did this painting a couple of years ago and have been trying to figure out how I get to my end result and emulate that in other pieces...no such luck so far but lots of fun along the way! (http://www.flickr.com/photos/debchaney/5228182902/)

What in your artistic training do you value most at this time?

My ability to share what I know in an inspiration and organized format in my workshops. http://www.debchaney.com/debchaney/Workshops.html

How much of a role do accident and control play in your work?

Making art is an interplay between careful thought and planning and pure unbridlged passion and accident.
It's like the juggle bewteen right and left brain, push and pull. There is a component of both control and accident tthat I experience in my work. Often the more I let go the better the resulting piece!

What are some of your artistic challenges at present?

Prioritizing the plethera of oppportunites available today for artists such as for art shows, competitions, grants, artist and resdientces,...it can be daunting and it makes a big effort to set goals, be clear on my values and stay on track...

What are some of your artistic accomplishments at present?

Participating in the 2010 Vancouver East Side CULTURE CRAWL with my fellow studio mates.
Working as a consultant for Rainmaker, Inc in Vancouver doing some commission art for one of their movies.
Selling two pieces from my Kerrisdale gallery ( now closed).
Teaching workshop independently every month since August 2010.
Being a mentor for a Director Studies art student with the University Southern California Santa Barbara.

Can you share three things you’ve learned as an artist through your own art?

1. Keeping the three 3 C's in mind help make the process of art making easier. C- content ( be clear on what you're communication), C - composition (have a solid design as your foundation), C- colour ( know what colour scheme you're using).

2. Three Secrets that make an abstract painting "Wow". That is, having a sense of breathing space in the piece. Having something unique - a variation in the piece. And, having an area of strong contrast in the piece.

3. When it's not working, put it aside!

When you need inspiration, how to do you get it?

Sit and wait and let it come.
Walk in nature.
Stop painting and take break.
Paint when I don't "feel " like it and let the inspiration come to me...
Hang out with other artists.
Look at art online.
Go visit a gallery or see a coffee shop art show.
Look at children's art - always so free and inspirational!
Look at art books and magazines.

When you need to learn more as an artist, how do you do it?

DVDs, workshops, talking to other artists, asking questions, looking at art, reading, art magazines, teaching- they say you teach what you want to learn, i agree, I've learned so much about my own art making process by sharing it with others!

What is exciting on your artistic horizon?

A Possible Art show in San Francisco summer 2011.

A Possible New York show March 2012

An upcoming trip to visit Santa Fe, New Mexico and to check out galleries!

What is it about this artwork (self-selected work shown) that led you to choose it for this feature? What specific challenges did you face in making this artwork?
These are some of my favorite pieces over the span of the last 3-4 years. I chose some small 9 x 12 pieces on canvas because they represent the work I do while I'm teaching and demonstrating. I chose to show some of the pieces with many layers of mixed medis, sand and collage elements as its the springboard to where my work is leading me currently.

Selected work for AOM is on flicker at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/debchaney/

Thank you very much for this attention and honor. Sincerely, Deb Chaney

Five abstract artists I think are fabulous

Five abstract artists I think are fabulous

I Went to Chapter's bookstore on the weekend with my daughter a few weekends back. She hung out and played with all their super new toys and books ( they re-did their kids section, it's great) while I leafed through every art magazine I could get my hands on. Super fun afternoon.

Here are five abstract artist I came across that blew me away....
  1. Dorothea Van Camp. Wow, drool, drool . Every painting I've looked at so far on her website is so incredibly and awe inspiring. I'm hoping to see her work 'in person' when I am next back east. http://www.unit35.com/
  2. Katy Kuhn. I actually came across her work outside of SF in a Starbucks years back but was reminded of her work and visited her site recently. Love her abstract landscape pieces: http://www.katykuhn.com/KatyKuhn/abstract+landscapes.html#5

  3. Michael Adamson. Particularly I was struck by a piece show cased in a magazined called ; " Back from the River" http://www.wellingtongallery.com/Admin/SideMenu/10002.aspx?TopMenuID=10002

  4. Adele Sypesteyn. Her abstracts are awesome, but be sure to check out her horse photos which are beautiful and worth the look. http://www.sypesteynart.com/Abstracts.htm

  5. Elizabeth Barber. Particularly I was struck by a piece show cased in a magazined called; " Sun 1" http://elizabethbarberpaintings.blogspot.com/

Tell me what is it you plan to do...

The Summer Day

Who made the world?

Who made the swan and the black bear?

Who made the grasshopper?

This grasshopper, I mean –

the one who has flung herself out of the grass,

the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,

who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down -

who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.

Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

Now she snaps her wings open, and floats away.

I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.

I don’t know how to pay attention, how to fall down

into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

how to be idle and blessed, how to stroll through the fields,

which is what I have been doing all day.

Tell me, what else should I have done?

Doesn’t everything die at last, and too soon?

Tell me what is it you plan to do

with your one wild and precious life?

New work in progress...a glimpse of what's upcoming

Here are a few pieces I had hidden away at the Culture Crawl that were in progress and therefore not on display. I pulled them out for a few close friends and students to see and I thought I'd give you a sneak peak here to see what I'm excited about working on this new year...

OK, if I was photoshop savy I'd totally take the geeky image of myself out here but never mind me this painting is way so cool and very thick, full of waxy layers of white and light torquoise inspired by Sarah' Mclaghlan's version of Song for winter's Night. It'll change again from this picture but the process sure is fun. Lots of sanding and removal and then pouring more layers!

Man, I've been working on this painting wayyy too long. I'll be glad when it's done..but currently it still doesn't feel complete so I shall preservere until I know its done!

I love this painting and its been so close to finished for a couple of years now but I know it's still not totally there. Its so hard to work on a piece that is so beautiful....I hope I can get the courage and finish it up!

Ohhhh, this is by far my favourite, You can't tell now, but there is some super cool textures going on underneath the yellow that i will be revealing....I can't wait to see what this painting becomes!

back to the studio.....

Inside a workshop with Deb Chaney

I've had numerous inquiries over the last several months with questions about the workshops I offer. Emails asking about what type of art students create in class (wow! check it out!), if there are demonstrations (yes tons!), if there is lots of time to work (of course!) and so on...

My answer is best illustrated by sharing photos from inside workshops spanning August thru November 2010.

Thank you for all your interest and --- for those that take the leap, sign up and join me on the journey of creating art---- see you soon! register@debchaney.com --- workshop details at: http://www.debchaney.com/debchaney/Workshops.html

A Big Thank you to Lynne Oliver for photos of myself teaching.

During the course of a workshop, you will often experience and see the progression of a small painting with layering and other techniques presented. This is fun to see paintings evolve. Check out the finished painting here: http://www.debchaney.com/debchaney/Art_Portfolio/Pages/Little_Gems.html#5

I really enjoy doing demonstrations and sharing my passion and often feel like I am doing a one woman cooking show. It can get pretty crazy sometimes!

Scrubbing away at a painting to show a technique.

I will often use my own art practice pieces in critique in class to illustrate my thought process in terms of what I am going to do next on this piece and why.

I can get very animated!

Some workshops with less people everyone gets a table and we can all really spread out which is nice.
A students works with GOLDEN liquid acrylics practicing overlapping frames design and glazing with polymer medium and paint.

I was so astounded at this piece of work that "student" Anni Hunt gave it to me! Unbelievably this was her first experience working with paint.

Working on projects... I've often had students glare at me unconsciously when I let them know they've got a few more minutes of working time before the next demonstration! They get so into their art work it's awesome!

New York City building emerging from a horizontal overlapping frames abstract piece. It was fun to see this piece develop.

one word: wow. I love the use of colour here.

This was the October 31st workshop, hence the halloween hat!

Beautiful student abstract landscape pieces!

getting started glazing, layering and trusting with the flow of art making here!

Wow, students simply blow me away with their creations!

Often, the first exercise in the workshop is a "copy cat"...students pick an abstract painting image from a magazine or book and use it as inspiration or directly copy it to get the creative juices flowing.

I encourage students to work on many pieces at a time!

Laying pieces in progress out to dry.

Another version of abstract lanscapes, no two are alike.

I often give students specific projects to learn certain techniques and concepts. Here Holly is working hard on the Patchwork assignment.

Lots of water available to keep painting and not have to stop. Go Aubrey!

Molly's in her groove. You can see the workbook next to her. We follow that for the entire "Energizing and Experimental Abstract Painting ( INTRO) class in acrylics and mixed media" so students don't have to worry about taking copious notes...it's all in the book.

I get inspired every time I teach! Love seeing what students come up with!

You will have FUN!
I always make a point of sharing my SMIGLs ritual at the end of each workshop. What were your Successes, Magic Moments, Intuitions, Gratitudes and Learnings today? Write them down!

2011 workshop schedule is now up! http://www.debchaney.com/debchaney/Workshops.html

Brock House Art Class End of Year Party & Art Show

We wrapped up our nine week Experimental and Energizing Abstract Painting class in acrylics at Brock house with a wonderful party and art show at Brock House Community Center in the conservatory. All the artists brought friends and family and hung their work up on clothes pegs around the room. Cas, the cook extraordinaire, made polenta, biscotti and all sorts of other treats for us to enjoy. Fantastic turnout and a great way to end the semester! See you all next year, Deb!

Breathing Space...hike at Point Lobos, California

I've been saving this blog post for a while... I figured after The Crawl, I'd probably be going into hiding for a while, which usually means being in nature and not much communication with the outside world and pretty much no computers, internet, facebook, twitter or phones...

So, you won't be seeing much of me unless you're signed up for my our December 11th one day Goal Planning workshop in Dunbar area of Vancouver, BC - then I'll see you then. (inquiries info@debchaney.com)

Here is some outdoor inspiration we enjoyed during our October trip to California for your "breathings space" enjoyment! Pictures are from our hike at Point Lobos State Park.

We enjoyed a beautiful morning hike at Point Lobos and then finished the day off with an awesome lunch in Carmel at "Tommy's Wok" - a must eat chinese food restaurant that is unbelievably great food and excellent prices !!! - and said said hello to Greg's friends Deborah & Kerry Lee and owners of Kerry Lee Remarkable Jewelry of Carmel. Our last stop was at Winfield Gallery where we spoke with gallery owner Chris Winfield and I fell in love with encaustic artist Tracy Adams...(Made the big splurge and bought Tracy's retrospective full colour brochure "Mindful Inversions" - AWESOME!!!) (!!!)

The process behind the FULL MOON FROG POND paintings

Presenting ...the making of the three original paintings inspired by Gregory Rosa's deep listening CD release: FULL MOON FROG POND. In this blog I'm taking you 'behind the scenes' into my studio to see the process of creating the pond triptych paintings..enjoy!

I started this triptych of paintings with a walk with Greg around the Frog Pond near Jericho beach where he originally recorded the frog sounds that inspired this compilation. During this walk we formulated the idea of creating original art work to go with the CD release as a special edition for collectors and also to raise money for the Wilderness Committee.

I began by asking Greg for any paperwork on this music project that I could use to formulate the content of these paintings. He gave me images for the CD cover and back as well as an aerial view of the frog pond, a sketch of his music score notes "FMFP thinking", an image of a frog and a copy of the music itself. My content was clear: frogs and my focus the frog pond - both interlaced with the music that Greg created from this.

My next step was to get clear on my colour. I chose to follow the greens used in his album cover along with an analogous suite of colours including green shades, blues, whites and blacks.

I began by laying out the three Arches 300 pound water colour paper and sketching out in pencil the layout of the frog pond, based on the aerial view and through it the lines noting where Greg made the recordings of the frog sounds. I used a T-square ruler to make the lines and drew triangles where they intersected.

I drew an outline of the pond and I then used clear tar gel to outline the pond and for later when I would put in the "water" so it wouldn't go outside of the pond borders. I used white gesso around the pond to prime the marshland for painting of the analogous greens.

I wanted to keep the aerial image of the path around the pond where we walked and talked bout this project to begin with. I used Artist Safe Removal tape and GAC 500 to delineate the path around the pond.

I used wet on wet india ink for the ground layer of the pond and its black edges. The effects created where similar to what we saw in the aerial photograph which was exciting and gave the pond some nice features and characteristics. The ink and water stayed within the boundaries because of the clear tar gel surrounding it.

The black and white painting really resembled the aerial photograph!

This part was so fun! I love wet on wet india ink on paper!

I then painted the green marsh land - the frog's homes- surrounding the pond.

After the india ink layer was dry I began to layer the lake with liquid acrylic paint mixed with gloss medium polymer to give the lake its glossy sheen. I applied several layers like this, allowing each one to dry after the next one. when the paint began to puddle or pool in one area I used a large sea sponge to remove excess paint and the action of moving the sponge over the lake reminded me of frogs hopping around which was fun and resonance of the theme.

Once the lake and the marsh land were dry, i took the papers Greg had given me and reverse transferred them into the painting. Look closely and you will see image of frogs, the album cover, the music score.

I then added scratch marks denoting the foldable surrounding the pond with pencil and lyra pencil crayons within the green marshy area and also did some loose sketches of frogs…as well as writing in with india ink (PITT pens) the titles of the scores on this album. These markings are all hidden beneath a final wash of titanium white i used over the green marshy area.

To complete the paintings I painted them with a gloss medium water mixture isolation coat and varnish them with museum quality archival varnish. greg and I will then have them photographed as their full 3 pieces and then tear them into 27 individual abstract pieces of the pond which will be available to collectors as a limited edition with the FULL MOON FROG POND CD.

Own a piece of the pond!

You are cordially invited to the CD release and art unveiling of “FULL MOON FROG POND” on Friday, November 26th at 6pm , as part of Vancouver’s Eastside Cultural Crawl at Deb Chaney’s studio, 1790 Vernon Drive.

Monday November 29, 2010, Vancouver, B.C., Canada - Vancouver sound artist Gregory Rosa and abstract painter Deb Chaney joined forces to create a CD and painting series—FULL MOON FROG POND—and will donate 10% of their proceeds to the Wilderness Committee, Canada’s largest membership-based, citizen-funded wilderness protection group.

The couple’s “Own A Piece of the Pond!” campaign is designed to raise money for the Committee by offering original artwork that complements the music, as a special limited edition for sale to art collectors. The couple will be having a CD release and art unveiling on Friday, November 26th at
Chaney’s studio, as part of Vancouver’s annual Eastside Culture Crawl.

Rosa layered the main track of the CD using a field recording he made of Pacific Tree Frogs at Jericho Park on a full moon springtime night. Inspired by the music, Chaney created an abstract mixed media acrylic triptych, based on the outline of the pond. Chaney then tore each panel into nine individual abstract pieces, and these 27 pieces are available to collectors with an accompanying CD. A high-quality, limited edition photographic reproduction of the triptych is also available, also with CD.

Gregory Rosa (né Molesky) is an emerging New Music sound artist who creates contemplative, deep listening works. He is also a writer-director, and currently has a project in development as part of Telefilm’s Feature Film Fund. http://gregoryrosa.com

Deb Chaney is an emerging contemporary abstract artist who paints large layered mixed media
abstract paintings on canvas and paper. Her most recent body of work, “Pure Abstraction,” takes her art to a deeper level in expressing her deep passion for nature via the thick layering of mixed medias, sand, paper and acrylic paints. http://www.debchaney.com

The Wilderness Committee, founded in 1980, is a registered non-profit society with charitable status. With over 30,000 members from coast to coast to coast, and 40,000 additional donors and volunteers, they are Canada’s largest membership-based, citizen-funded wilderness protection group.
